We all know the importance of sunscreen, however we are starting to learn they may be causing more harm than good.   Chemical Sunscreens are one of the worst offenders on the market - they contain numerous toxic substances and cannot cater to the sensitive needs of your babies skin.  Mineral Sunscreens use alternate ingredients to help deflect the UV rays, creating a physical barrier. Our recipe uses 100% Pure Pharmaceutical Grade Non-Nano Zinc Oxide.  Non-nano zinc oxide allows the product to stay on top of the skin and not absorb in the bloodstream. While UPF Sunsuit coverage is a more effective way to protect skin, it is also important to choose a Sunscreen with higher SPF for yourself and your children.

Due to our son’s struggle with eczema, sunscreen in the traditional sense was not really an option for us.  While playing around with different recipes I learned about using a non nano zinc oxide as our active ingredient and was very, very happy with the result! Non nano means that this active SPF ingredient lives on top of the skin vs absorbing into the skin and subsequently travelling through the body.   After 20+ different recipes, I created one that produces an effective SPF of 35+, and that feels amazing on the skin! This recipe actually made my son’s eczema improve upon application. We still try to limit reliance on sunscreen, opting for UPF 50+ fabrics instead (See our post about SPF vs UPF here).

Whipped Organic Eczema Friendly Natural Sunscreen

Ingredients:

½ C Organic Shea Butter

⅓ C Organic Coconut Oil (Melted)

15 drops Organic carrot seed essential oil

10 drops Organic raspberry seed essential oil

2 Tbsp Pharmaceutical Grade Non-Nano Zinc Oxide

Whip Shea butter with an electric mixer until fluffy (3-4 Minutes).  Slowly add melted coconut oil while continuing to mix. Add in essential oils and Zinc Oxide mixing on a low speed to combine.  Add in any scented oils you would like for smell (Tea Tree Oil, Eucalyptus, Lavender etc). Store in a sealed container and avoid prolonged exposure in extreme heat.

*Please note: the SPF on this sunscreen is a conservative estimate based on each independent element and their naturally occurring SPF.  It has worked very well for our family, but each skin is different. Also, it is very important to choose swimwear or sunsuits with a strong UPF rating to ensure full coverage for your children.
